Lotions, Creams & Butters - What is the difference?

Hand and body lotions, creams, and butters are all moisturising products, but they differ in texture, formulation, intended use and individual preference.

1. Lotions: Typically lighter in texture, lotions are water-based and absorb quickly into the skin. They are ideal for everyday use and are often used for hydration without a heavy feel. Lotions are great for normal to slightly dry skin and are commonly used for hands and body.

2. Creams: Creams have a thicker consistency than lotions and usually contain a higher oil content, making them more suitable for dry or sensitive skin. They provide deeper hydration and are often used for specific areas that require extra moisture, like elbows or knees. Creams can be used for both hands and body.

3. Butters: Body butters are the richest of the three, with a dense, buttery texture that often includes ingredients like shea or cocoa butter. They are highly emollient and provide intense hydration, making them ideal for very dry skin or for use in colder climates. Body butters are typically used on the body and can be particularly beneficial for areas prone to dryness.
